Day 9 – On the Dalton
Got to start off today dismantling the baby elephant. Had to take off the fenders and get all the dirt and mud that was stuck in them out. Decided to just go without fenders for today. Because the roads are still muddy. They spread some kind of calcium mix on the road to make it hard. But it just seems to go into my fenders and then get stiff. So I went all day without fenders and got a little bit messy. But the Surly hung in there like a champ! Met a cyclist coming the other direction today. His name is Felix from Switzerland. He’s a doctor in Switzerland with his own practice and all he rides is the bike that he was on today. Does not own a car. Or anything else. I was very impressed with that. He then told me that he only takes two weeks Vacation each year. And he always goes somewhere on a bike tour for that two weeks. he told me Kazakhstan is amazing. This year he is riding Fairbanks to Deadhorse. Hell of a vacation! I pulled off 22.8 miles through the Brooks Range. It’s a beautiful place! Sawtooth mountains on both sides of you twisting through a narrow valley with the pipeline. Barely anyone around. What a gift.
